Connect Movie Review

 Connect Movie Review

Filmmaker Ashwin Saravanan’s ‘Connect’ features Nayanthara, Sathyaraj, and Anupam Kher in the titular roles. The director’s previous outings – Maya (again with Nayanthara in the lead role) and Game Over with Taapsee Pannu, owned unique story premises and were appreciated too. With ‘Connect’, he attempts to prove his best in his favorite territory of Supernatural Thriller.

The story is set during the Lockdown phase, where the entire world had to shut down. Life was so easy and beautiful for Susan (Nayanthara) until her husband Joseph Benoy (Vinay Rai), a doctor passes away during his relentless service for COVID-affected patients. Sooner, both Susan and her daughter Anna (Haniya Nafisa) tested COVID positive. Then begins the actual Topsy-Turvy play of spooky strikes as Anna gets possessed. With the entire world not operating, Susan unable to leave the outside, and her father Arthur Samuel (Sathyaraj) unable to enter the house, how the family deals with the issues form the crux of the story.

Well, the Jump scares throw up the ultimate experience for the audiences and they’re sure to have a great time watching this flick in the theaters. But Ashwin has done something exceptional beyond this zone. His detailing is so precise. Watch out for a scene, where Vinay’s colleague, a doctor converses with Nayanthara through video call, and you’ll face the red patches on her face due to the consistent wearing of a mask. When it comes to characterizations, Ashwin has done remarkable work. Vinay Rai appears merely for a few minutes, but then, you’ll find the prominence to a great extent. Then, we come to cross Sathyaraj sending a Holy Water to Nayanthara, where she says, “I don’t know when it was packed and am concerned about the hygiene.”

The reason why we aren’t much focusing on the horror elements is that it reminds us of many Hollywood flicks, and it can’t be avoided too. However, the Sound Department is the biggest showstopper here. The film being shot in ‘Lockdown’ mode is very good when compared to other movies of this same genre.

Casting is yet another strong element of this film. If not for Nayanthara, Sathyaraj, and Anupam Kher, this would have been an ordinary flick. These three actors are seen confined to their walls and just face the camera more like a monologue and amaze us with the best they can do.

Overall, Connect on the technical aspect amazes you with top-notch visuals and sound and narratively gives a decent dose of Jump scares and thrills.

Verdict: Perfect casting, a riveting screenplay, and top-notch sound make ‘Connect’ offer a commendable theatrical experience.
