 Thugs Movie Review

Choreographer Brinda made her debut directorial with the film ‘Hey Sinamika’ released a year ago. Her second outing ‘Thugs’, produced by Riya Thameens, daughter of famous producer Shibu Thameens, is a remake of critically acclaimed Malayalam movie “Swathandrayam Ardarathriyil”.

The film opens with Sethu (Hridhu Haroon) imprisoned for the murder of his boss’ (PL Thenappan) aide, who is mistaken for stealing the money and several land documents. He teams up with the inmate Durai (Simha), Marudhu (Muniskanth), later with twins Ramesh & Rajesh (Arun & Arvind) and Bengali (Allwyn) and hatches an escape plan. Will they make it through the gigantic walls of prison that is under the supervision of deadly cop Arockia Dass (RK Suresh)?

The film, as known earlier, is a remake of a popular Malayalam movie ‘Swathandrayam Ardarathriyil’. Instead of getting into comparison, it’s better to stick with this remake version, as director Brinda and her team of technicians have attempted doing justice to the script, and even score brownie points. If the casting was done with few more popular artistes, the film would have achieved a finest output than what it is now. Well, that doesn’t the actors here haven’t done a good job. Newcomer Hridhu Haroon has greased his elbows for a perfect performance. With the same efforts and dedication, he is sure to capture the spotlights. Bobby Simha delivers a neat performance. Munishkanth has done a serious role, and has done what is required for his characterization. RK Suresh has a good screen presence, but goes little overboard in few places. Anaswara Rajan has a minimal screen appearance.

Cinematographer Priyesh retains a unique tone throughout the film and makes the visuals look groovy. Sam CS’s BGM is yet another emblazonment to the film. Editing is crisp and sleek, and we don’t find the lag or abrupt transitions anywhere. The last action sequences look slightly larger than life in places. If it was done with a natural approach, then the impact would have been more. However, the climax action sequence needs special mention.

Overall, Thugs has a good storyline borrowed from the Malayalam movie, and director Brinda has a decent job, and so are the actors and technicians.

Verdict: A decent remake and the team’s complete justice to the original version is appreciable.
